REAL WOOL

Wool is the real fleece

We are all familiar with fleece as a cold weather staple, but did you know the fleece originally referred to clumps of wool that is sheared from sheeps? In Greek mythology, the Golden Fleece is a precious treasure from a flying ram. However, fleece today has become synonymous with the synthetic material that mimics wool. Synthetic fleece is lightweight, warm, and affordable, but it also releases a large amount of microplastic fibers - a major cause of marine plastic pollution. That's why the HERENESS team decided to create a fleece jacket made from sheep's wool.

Combined with recycled materials

The body of the REAL WOOL FLEECE uses high-quality merino wool from New Zealand, which is biodegradable and eco-friendly. The wool fibers are the right length to prevent pilling while the collar is designed to keep you warm without any feeling of restriction. The lining of the jacket is made from recycled polyester, which wicks away sweat effectively. The breast pocket uses the same sugarcane-derived polyester material of HERENESS's popular SUGARCANE SHORTS and SUGARCANE LONG PANTS.

  • Fleece that does not pollute our oceans

Awareness of the impact of plastics on our oceans is rising. But did you know washing clothes made of synthetic fibers also contributes a significant portion of marine plastic pollution? Research shows that 35% of microplastics in the ocean comes from synthetic fibers, and synthetic fleece is most prone to shedding. To mitigate this problem, manufacturers are developing fleece that sheds less and laundry filters or balls to capture microfibers in the wash. The simplest solution, however, is to replace synthetic fleece with natural fibers. Wool is a natural protein material that biodegrades quickly, allowing you to enjoy the warmth and feel of fleece without the guilt.

  • Why non-mulesed merino wool?

New Zealand has decided to ban mulesing (the process of removing skin from sheep buttocks), and the wool we use is 100% sourced from Merino sheep in New Zealand. We believe that wool is a gift from sheep, and we should not support any practices that cause in their suffering. As a brand promoting the benefits of wool, we are committed to advocating for animal welfare.
